What do tou think about public safety depts? Good idea or not? Im retired from law enforcement and been in the fire service since 1982, and from personal experience I know that it is hard to do both well, one or the other suffers. I know guys that work for a local public safety dept that love law enforcement, and only train to fight fires because they have to, and guys that are just the opposite, and love the fire side. I'm not aginst the concept, I just haven't found a dept that is able to get the right balance. I am not trying to slam any one that does both, just wanted to hear other opinions.
I feel its a great thing if you got guys that like both sides fire and police, but if they only like one of them then it wont work. The city I live in is PS and its really working well for them.
I think there are a few good ones that work reasonably well. It all depends on how they are set up. DFW airport has or had a pretty decent program where one rotated through fire, police and EMS functions. A couple of people I knew up there said it kept them from getting in a rut. Another town in West Texas had EMS and Police. There were occasional complaints of "I called for an ambulance, and they sent a cop", or the other way around. They have since started hiring "unsworn" Paramedics.
