Have seen this several times. Usually its tall person with large size shoe or wide foot. We have worked with these people to help them lock in with another means. They just arnt physically able to do it the way us smaller folks can. Common sense says its not how you do it but that you get er done!
I sometimes have that problem when I try to do my leg locks.

Sometimes I have to reach down and help get my foot back threw.
Not that I can remember, of course they said I was crazy the way I would climb out of a window and onto a ladder in class so I probably never did have a problem. As long as what you did worked and is safe go for it.
I teach our ladder class and I get it alot. With our new bunker pants the dept is buying now we run into it more because they are bulkier than previous ones we had. I tell the guys to try it but if it isn't something you can do and get out of failrly quickly then grab a rope hose tool or a ladder belt from the truck co. Anything is better than nothing if something happens to you. I have a hard time doing it so you are not alone.
Can you lock your foot at the rail instead of the lower rung...? it is locked to keep you supported without slippage but your knee is actually your support...should be ok to use the rail....I'll try it next chance I get and see what happens....If you hear about a dumb Firefighter from NY that busted his butt.....well.....I guess then you know it didn't work....LOL....Stay safe....Paul
well sorry donnie, i didnt....
im sorry buddy i just had to give u a hard time, and just for everyone else that reads this im only 5'8 130 lbs wet.
Dillion i will get you when we get back to the academy for that.
no, it's all on how you poston yourself. it's ahard thing to do. but it never gets used. i have only heard of a few people ever seen it used. i heard they use it alot in new york and chicago.
did not meet such problems in Russia
Thats called a "Modified Leg Lock" and is being taught now by lots of depts. It does work well, I use it all the time as I also can not do a full leg lock. The modified works by either hooking your toes on the rail, or on the rung below. Check out Fireengineering.com in their training videos, they have a short blurb about modified leg locks, arm locks, etc. Great video by a captain from an FDNY ladder company.
