PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Pittsburgh City Council wants to ban sofas and mattresses from porches, citing fire risks.

Council gave unanimous preliminary approval to an ordinance that would do so on Wednesday. Violators would face a fine of $200 to $500 each day.

Councilman Bruce Kraus introduced the bill and showed colleagues a video of a man burning a couch in the city's Oakland section _ home to the University of Pittsburgh _ after the Steelers won the Super Bowl. He says burning the items could lead to house fires.

The ordinance would ban "upholstered furniture manufactured primarily for indoor use" from porches, balconies and non-enclosed areas. Outdoor furniture wouldn't be affected.

A final vote is scheduled for Tuesday.
