KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. - Police say a suburban Philadelphia firefighter killed in an explosion at his home was experimenting with homemade rocket fuel.

State police say 22-year-old James McGovern died in an explosion Saturday in his front yard in Kennett Square, Chester County.

Authorities say McGovern was experimenting with homemade fuel when he touched off what they called an "accidental catastrophic chemical explosion."

Investigators say the volunteer firefighter launched small rockets as a hobby.

Longwood Fire Chief Matt Ruoss told the Daily Local News of West Chester that McGovern was a member of the fire company and called him "one of the top responders last year."
