Parents Arrested After Daughter Is Rescued From Apartment Fire

HAZLETON, Pa. - Police have filed child endangerment charges against the parents of a young girl who had to be rescued from a Pennsylvania apartment fire.

Police say Pablo Chirre and Silvia Elisa Diaz were not at the scene of Saturday afternoon's blaze in Hazleton when firefighters had to rescue a 3- to 4-year-old girl from a smoke-filled apartment.

Investigators say the parents returned to the building around 6 p.m. and charged after being interviewed by officers.

The girl was treated for smoke inhalation and released into the custody of county child welfare workers.

Authorities say the fire started in the kitchen of a first-floor unit. The building is not inhabitable but can be repaired.

It was not immediately clear if the girl's parents had attorneys.
