Orange County Fire Authority to Use Actual Flags for Warnings

IRVINE, Calif. - Southern Californians are accustomed to hearing the phrase "red flag warning" in weather reports when conditions are ripe for wildfires.

Now one county will begin raising real red flags.

The Orange County Fire Authority said Thursday it will alert the public to elevated fire danger by hoisting red flags at parks and other facilities. The flags are emblazoned with the words "Fire Alert."

The program will also use fire watch volunteers to monitor the county's wilderness parks during danger periods when winds are strong, humidity is low and temperatures are high.

The Los Angeles suburb of Sierra Madre has been using green, yellow and red flags to alert residents to mudslide dangers when rain falls on steep mountains above the city that burned in a 2008 wildfire.

Not a bad idea. Maybe it should be use across the country for areas when they have the same conditions.
