Ohio Cop asks Mayor to Resign over FD Cuts
(AP) WARREN, Ohio - An Ohio police officer who was wounded when he saved people from a fire blames his injuries on budget cuts that shut down a nearby fire station.
Warren police Officer Doug Hipple spoke at a city council meeting Wednesday and offered his condolences over the death of one fire victim. Then he asked Mayor Michael O'Brien to step down because, he says, the city is failing.
Hipple was hurt April 28 saving people from the arson fire in the northeast Ohio city. He arrived on the scene before firefighters.
The mayor describes Hipple as understandably frustrated with the budget crisis. O'Brien says it's a tough time to be mayor.

Governments FIRST responsibility is to the safety of their constituents. They seem to forget that. IF they were so civic minded THEY would all work for free, and give up their benifits. If the majority of the Nations firefighters provide service for no salary, and give up not only countless hours for training and emergency service response...and somethimes their health and even lives...there is NO reason why politicians should receive a salary and benifits.
They seem to be the LAST to give anything back. they will take vore themselves raises, while they close companies and cut staffing. And as soon as someone gets hurt as a direct result of their "cuts" they blame the unions for grandstanding and using scare tactics.
If a community had x number of companies and a hypothetic staffing of 4 to a company, and then the city cuts a few houses and goes down to 3 on a company, then state it will have NO impact on service, that tells me they were irresponsible in the first place because the community didn't need those extra houses and that fourth firefighter on each company.

This is where I grew up. I read this and I was so glad he spoke up and said something... My friend works for the department and is leaving for a better job b/c they don't know day to day what is going to happen. They also just took a ton of concestions too and the mayor hasn't taken cuts in anything.. they area is depresed as can be.. all the jobs are leaving.. I moved away from there 2 years ago and it has only gotten worse.. I guess nothing will change unless someone dies.. and actully one of the people in the fire did die this last week.

Glad to hear someone besides fire service say something about these budget cuts. Governments need to realize that with these budget cuts, they are putting citizens lives in danger.
