Well just read the new NFPA guideline for turn-out gear.....It states that turnouts have to be inspected monthly and the Reflective shell has to be replaced every 5 years and the entire set has to be replaced every 10 years.....What is this going to do to your Department...? We are going to have to dedicate $5000 every year from our budget just for turn-outs....so guys check your labels...if the manufactured date is 1998 it has to come out of service and can only be used for training....and that training has to be non live fire...I know NFPA is trying to keep all safe....but how dow e pay for these guidelines......??? Stay safe all..........Paul

Once again regulations without resources. Outer shell every 5, ain’t that like 75% of the cost??? Might as well replace then. Good set of PPE is what…$1200-1500. How many dept’s can comply with this?? Maybe 5%. I’m not saying this is bad, I just see very few being able to comply, including us. Has there been a problem…LODD or near miss…due to this?? I can understand having a working life for gear, inspect and replace if need be, but come-on, is there manufactures on the NFPA board???
No big deal to use, we've got 34 members and no one has gear older than 2000, except maybe a couple of probies but they dont participate in live fires anyways. I must say our department does pretty good on keeping use with newer gear. I know this might hurt some departments in my area but we've helped them out before and I'm sure we'll do it again.
