LAS VEGAS - A Clark County lawmaker says he doesn't think area firefighters should be soliciting charitable donations at malls and supermarkets while they're at work.

Commissioner Steve Sisolak says he was stunned to learn recently that Clark County firefighters are on duty when they conduct annual "boot drive" solicitations for organizations including the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Sisolak also wondered why Clark County singles out Muscular Dystrophy over other causes.

All Las Vegas-area fire departments are due to take part in the boot drive Friday and Saturday.

Sisolak has been critical lately of firefighters' pay levels, overtime and benefits.

The union is currently negotiating a new contract with the county.

Well, ya see, it's like this.

Firefighters make too much money.

Firefighters have too many benefits.

He would rather them get paid to stay in their stations, lounging on their lazy boys and watching TV. How dare they go out in public on company time and try to do something to help fellow citizens.

I'm also guessing that they do not allow people that have disabling diseases such as MD live in LV.
Probably not surprising but I agree with the Commissioner on this; Firefighters are on duty and should NOT be collecting for a charity. Regardless of the charity. It is not in their job description. Moreover, why MD? Why not for a burn center? Or for breast or prostate cancer?

While the Commissioner's attitude may indeed be a dickish one, it is defensible. But if an argument can be made to allow for collecting for charities while on duty, then one could certainly make an argument to require firefighters to wash politicians vehicles, police cars, mow lawns or pick up garbage. After all, if they have this free time, use it to benefit the community instead of a non-profit charity. Or is it just because they are firefighters and so they should be allowed to do as they please while on duty.

Seems we recently had a discussion (subsequently deleted) about whether or not firefighters should be paid for training. Strong arguments were made in favor of firefighters being paid to take (additional/mandatory) training but that argument does not carry over with regard to firefighters being paid to collect for charities. Two very different things. One is for the betterment of their job and community, the other is solely for the benefit of a charity.
