This is a picture of my brother before his house burnt down as a result of an ember attack. (Not to self: talk to him over a beer about proper PPE to wear...!)
A FRANKSTON North house is in flames after ember attacks from a wild bushfire south of Melbourne set a roof alight this afternoon.
Residents are being warned to stay alert as the grass and scrub fire burns wildly in the Seaford area.
At 1.30 you'll see my brothers house go up. (also more at 2.45)
He was sayign that there was fire briagde trucks all around, but it took at least 4 minutes to get water happening- I explained the differences between wildfire suppression and structural firefighting and why it may have taken a bit of time to change over tactics, equipment, etc.
He accepts it- he's certainly not negative towards the fire brigades.
From the looks of it, the guys close to his house only had wildfire PPE - no structural PPE makes it a bit hard :( When paged out to a wildfire, you dress for that.
That was a bugger Luke, seeing the smoke issueing from so much of the roof that way. I think the ember(s) may have got in and started with the insulation? Or maybe with stuff stored in the roof space? Whatever, the house doesn't look very old, truss built? If so, that light-weight pine would catch very quickly. As I said, what a bugger :(
