AMORY, Miss. - Authorities say a volunteer firefighter was killed while responding to a fire call.

Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley said in a news release that 18-year-old Jacob Anthony Carter of Amory died at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo Sunday after his SUV ran off the road, overturned and struck a tree.

The accident occurred just before noon on McCullen Road south of Amory.

Gurley says Carter was pronounced around 2 p.m.

Officials say Carter, who was a firefighter with the Becker-Athens Volunteer Fire Department, was not wearing his seat belt.

The accident is under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff's Department.

Agreed Chief! Totally! Please let this be yet another learning experience for everyone who thinks they are invincible! Condolences to the family, and the department!
This is why EVERYONE should be trained in driving in emergency mode and go through Defensive Driving. However, the most important thing people should do is buckle up.

I see it all of the time in ambulances - people just get in and don't buckle up. It truly irks me, especially since driving with lights and sirens is especially dangerous.

Although I hate to say it, I think emergency personnel should start either being fined OR repremanded for not wearing seatbelts on ANY apparatus.

Our new ladder won't drive past a certain speed if it detects that personnel aren't wearing their seatbelts.
Andrew, brilliant idea.. and I am sure someone has thought of this..but in today's modern computerized vehicles, AND apparatus, surely they can design a system that will not only slow the vehicle down, but shut the engine down totally. that would stop it better than a tree!
My thoughts and prayers go out to Jacob's family. Sad to see such a young life gone, but proud to see it was lost trying to help someone, not in a crime. Brother, the Lord awaits you, ascend to the Hero portion of Heaven.
It is doable - our truck does it. Well, it powers down so you cannot go over a certain speed, at least.

I know wearing the seatbelts can be a pain - especially over PPE and a pack - but it's totally worthwhile.
