It happened Monday evening at 10320 Westlake Drive in Bethesda, which is located across from the Westfield Montgomery mall. Firefighters received reports that smoke was coming from a small, fourth-floor apartment, and crews encountered heavy smoke when they arrived at the scene. The fire was put out within about 20 minutes.
Officials say the firefighter who was driving the fire engine was getting gear back into the truck when a car drove through the emergency scene and hit him. Investigators say the driver was told to stop, but didn't.
The injured firefighter was transported to a local hospital, and he is being admitted with serious injuries.
