Maryland Fire Engine Hits Tree During Children's Event
PASADENA, Md. - A group of eight children exploring a fire truck went for an unexpected ride Saturday in Pasadena.

The Lake Shore Volunteer Fire Company was holding a demonstration when the truck's emergency brake released, and the truck rolled down a hill and crashed into a tree.
A spokesman for the Anne Arundel County Fire Department says none of the children were hurt, but one firefighter who tried to stop the truck was slightly injured.

I don't want to be a Monday morning quarter back without all the knowledge especially , but what I have to say is simple ,use the wheel chocks in case just such an accident results in the brakes being released. That would make this into a non event since the vehicle can't roll.

as such like the last post where were the damm wheel chocks, i too work f.d., and a comm driver also, as a driver of my engine when i get out, if my #2 man dont place the chocks i do, very poor on the operator. this is the first time i;ve posted negetive sorry for doing so, but this one made me mad

Wow those sneeky little fire prevention kids.... They must have pulled the wheel chocks before releasing the maxxi's too.... hmmmmm? All I can say is lucky, damn lucky no children were seriously injured or killed.
I would be curious to know if "this birthday party" .... wait I mean public education demonstration was an offical authorized event. In this economy, I wonder what the city or town administrator's feel about this.

Something like that almost happened to me. We were at a parade and asked to move to a side street on a steep hill. I put on the E=brakes and went to get out and the engine started rolling backwards. Luckily no one was behind me.

Yep Craig the brakes need to be well adjusted ,but, by design brakes are designed to operate more efficiently in a forward direction than reverse. Mostly because forward is the direction more often used and at a greater speed than reverse.

IT'S ALL ABOUT SAFETY AND WE SHOULD ALL THINK OF SAFETY FIRST......WHEN IT'S PARKED CHOCK IT.....NOT ONLY WILL IT SAVE YOU TIME AND MONEY FOR REPAIRS AND POSIBILTY OF INJURY BUT THE EMBARRASSMENT OF YOUR ENGINE RUNNING DOWN THE STREET AND HITTING A TREE.
