Lousiana Battalion Chief Remains Critical Fall from Laddder Truck at Mardi Gras Parade

SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) -- A Shreveport fireman remained in critical condition Tuesday with a broken neck suffered when he fell from the top of a ladder truck used in a weekend Mardi Gras parade.

A fund for 52-year-old Battalion Chief Tommy Adams was set up Monday at the Professional Fire Fighters Credit Union.

Department officials say the 31-year veteran was securing material on the top of the ladder truck when he lost his balance and fell about 10 to 15 feet to the ground after the parade Saturday night.

His heart had to be re-started at Willis Knighton-Pierremont Hospital, where he was on a ventilator.

The department was investigating the accident.

02-24-09 Update: Fund set up for injured Shreveport firefighter

A fund has been set up for a Shreveport firefighter who was seriously injured when he fell from a fire truck Saturday.

Battalion Chief Tommy Adams remains in critical condition at a local hospital.

The 31-year veteran was securing material on the top of a ladder truck used in the Krewe of Gemini Mardi Gras parade when he lost his balance and fell about 10 to 15 feet to the ground, according to department officials.

Adams stopped breathing and lost a pulse en route to the hospital, and CPR and other lifesaving measures were performed.

He regained a pulse, but his respiration had to be mechanically controlled through a ventilator.

Adams was diagnosed with a severe cervical vertebra fracture and is in the Intensive Care Unit.

The fund is at the Professional Fire Fighters Credit Union, 9410 Healthplex, under account number 2227008.

All monetary donations will assist Adams, his wife and two daughters during his recovery period.
