My president asked me to find some solutions concerning live ins. We had up to 8 people living at the firehouse. It helped engine response quite a bit. Right now we're down to 2 or 3 depending. We don't have hard set rules but most feel that if you're at the fiehouse you should get on the engine.
Do you have live ins and if so what rules do you have. Do you charge rent?
I was a live-in on McMahan Fire & Rescue in Kentucky for 5 years. There were 5 of us initially, then we had as many as 7.
We were required to take calls from midnight until 8am Sunday through Thursday. If we were at the station outside of these hours, we were expected to take the call.
The 40 hour per week schedule was in lieu of paying rent. We all had "regular jobs" during the day.
When the station was remodeled, the second floor was designed specifically for the live-ins, with our own bedrooms, kitchen, lounge, laundry facilities and of course, bathrooms. Only the live-ins and chief officers had keys to the second floor.
Having live-ins meant we could have the first engine out of the station in a minute, and only needed one or two additional personnel to get the first truck out. This helped us achieve and maintain an ISO Class 2 rating, because the live-ins were technically 40 hour employees for staffing the station.
