LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A Louisville fire department's board has dismissed a high-ranking firefighter after ruling he was guilty of misconduct by harassing a co-worker with racial comments.
The Pleasure Ridge Park Fire Protection District board dismissed Capt. Robert "Danny" Heil Wednesday night.
The Courier-Journal reports that firefighter Chris Glass filed a complaint nine months ago over Heil.
Glass alleged that Heil used a racial slur about an African-American man and that Heil once wore a pillowcase over his head talking about the Ku Klux Klan.
Heil declined to comment after the hearing, but his attorney Thomas Clay says he had hoped the board would consider Heil's remorse and his past service. Heil had been with the department since 1991.
"Heil said he did not recall the first instance of dressing as a Klan member, saying “that just don't sound like my character.”
He also said he didn't remember calling another driver a racial slur while he was around Glass on a fire run, but said he could see himself “slipping” in the heat of a moment."
I only see two colors. Red and green. Green is the color of the money I make, and red is the color I see when someone tries to screw me out of the green.
You almost have to be this way in today's society. You never know who is listening or reading.
