I have been watching some of the postings on here by the less than literate junior members lately. I have also seen some of the "I want to be a firefighter types" post some ridiculous things on here. These discussions inevitably turn into the "learn to spell" or "shut-up and learn" conversations. I am not saying I have not participated in them either. But, is there some way to limit the posting capabilities of members? What if the junior members were only able to post in the junior area? Or, what if they were not allowed on here at all? I am sure that they can figure out a way to get around any sort of age requirement for membership, they are a little smarter than that. But, if they start posting immature crap, turn off their capability to post at all. They can still learn an awful lot with a read-only account.
Ya know what Chief, you are absolutely right. I got upset because explorers are in the department for the same reason as you, to help people and go into a noble profession, and they are subject to this treatment. Yes some explorers post stuff on here that is totally inapropriate for this site. I do admit I have done it. I don't understand why firefighters and explorers can't get along to learn from each other. No matter what your experience level is you can always learn form one another
Ben,
You were there, almost there, so close and then whoosh, you veered off in the wrong direction.
Not busting on you but really, what could I learn from you, or any explorer? Nine years or so into it and I'm still learning the trade, what can you teach me about it?
You might turn me onto a song I'd like, maybe. Perhaps clue me in on a tv show or movie, maybe. But what can you tell me about life? Got any ideas on how to keep the wife happy? Pay the bills? Creative accounting techniques?
Do you have a preference for a pick ax or a flathead? Why? Are two 1.75" lines better than one 2"? Is a 2" line better than an 1/75"? Do you know what the size of a 2" x 4" is? What exactly is legacy construction? If I told you to open the soffit and pull the rake board would you look at me like I had antlers?
I won't absolutely discount the possibility that you could teach me something, but would it be about firefighting? Have you ever noticed how much older than you your teachers are? Do you think there's a reason for that?
Exactly, Ben.
That is why I blog for this site. Believe it or not, with almost 30 years in the fire service, I continue to learn, share that, along with some of the wisdom that I have had the pleasure of learning as well. The learning process should never stop. The younger firefighters, by merit of the fact that they are younger, naturally have more to learn. I would expect that junior/explorers with knowledge should share that with other junior/explorers. And you are absolutely right to believe that "seasoned" firefighters should share their experiences with other firefighters; junior/explorers as well.
But, like the analogy that I use sometimes, there are young gunslingers who come into town, looking to take out the old gunslingers to make a name for themselves. Therein lies the problem.
It is commonly felt that younger members should have their eyes and ears open more and their mouths opened less.
Opinions should be carefully contemplated before they are shared; whatever the age.
And, just so you know and may have already discovered, I prefer the direct approach sans sugar coating. It's a character trait that I struggle with but can live with.
I try to keep the broad brush in the box.
TCSS.

I do not mean any disrespect by what i said. I am sure that theres alot that my senior members that can teach me. I wish to learn alot, that is why I joined the explorers, so that i have prior knowledge to make my future studies easier. And I believe the benefits of 2 1.75 inch lines over 1 2 inch lines has to do with the friction loss.
I do appologize for the stuff I caused. I just hope we can get along so we learn from one another. But most likely it will be me learning from the senior firefighters. And one thing you can teach me is what is the direct approach sans sugar coating.
The direct approach sans sugar coating is to deliver the facts without the fluff.
When a question is asked, I answer it.
Where I take the long and winding road is in my blogs. It takes a little longer to tell a story; you know?
Devon,
The purpose for being here are exactly what you've stated. The whole point is to read, learn and move forward. Ask questions for clarification, that's the purpose of this site, for everyone to learn.
If you've looked around you'll see that there are a lot of pointless topics, many by adults. And it's not like we don't like to have a good "discussion" at times, unrelated as they may be to the fire service but again, the overall gestalt here is one of sharing and learning.
I think also that if you read the comments right here in this post you'll see what it is that most bothers people. I don't think you fall into the category of annoyance. One thing I have noticed is that few people bother to use the search option in the upper left. I don't think anyone really has any problem answering questions for people that are truly interested in learning the trade.
few people bother to use the search option in the upper left.
Or in the upper right corner.
:-)
Although that is a big issue too, it takes seconds to do a simple search to see if something has been covered before.
On THAT note though, in some cases it may be better to just start a new topic if the old discussion has so many posts, it makes it difficult to follow. As it is, one can comment to a post and the post could be on page 12 of a 27 page thread. Just makes it hard to follow.......maybe if the webteam looks into that issue, that would be nice.
Rest assured you will most likely never see a junior's only sandbox, especially with no senior FF intervention. Explorer/jr programs were designed to give a taste of the job to youth and they contain adult input and supervision, no program is just kids and you wouldn't see that here. For me, I would hate to see one of our explorers running their mouth and making the dept look bad and not be able to intervene.
Bottom line isn't that explorers have to have their own area, but just to act mature, think before posting, use proper spelling and grammar (this isn't text messaging here), do a simple search before posting a new topic and be respectful. That isn't too much to ask, is it?
