Hey, well i have to write a an editorial on an important topic. SInce i am a member of the Bagdad fire protection district junior program i chose the topic of juniors being pulled from school to go on calls. However i cant find really reliable information on the actual dept.'s that pull students from school so i need your help. I need:

statistics for how mant departments pull juniors from class

Regulations for what kind of call and if the time of the day makes a difference as to if they are pulled out of class

age limits on being pulled from class

if a drivers license is required to leave class

if missed work can be made up

excused absence?

if red/blue lights are given for personal vehicle use from school to a fire scene

what types of call they can respond to during school hours

and anything else you think might be relevant to my topic
Thank you so very much, stay safe
Jessica

Well I am a Junior FF and i think this is one of the most absurd things I have ever heard of. Im a senior in high school and i would never think of leaving to respond to a call. As most of the other members are saying education is the most important thing in a kids life at this time. And on the issue of emergency lights it is absolutley not aloud for a junior to have any form of emergency lighting on their vehicle. Any junior that would ever think of leaving school to respond to a call should seriously look at their priorities.
wen sum1 whs a junor firemen typez lyk dis,,,,,

THEY SHOULD NOT BE LEAVING SCHOOL.

The department I run with is large and has multiple juniors throughout the five stations, none of which can leave school for a firecall. Pagers are also not to be carried in school as they are just a distraction. Seems like thats how most departments run it?
I've said it before... I'll say it again and continue to say it...

Any "fire department" that relies on children to respond to fight a fire isn't a fire department... it is a CHILD ABUSE AGENCY
My School allows us to leave on major incidents only. If they find out it wasnt major we get in trouble. The cheif has to write us a note and have that approved by the school. We are allowed to use lights, and if the person doesnt have a DL we carpool. Its our responsibility to make up work. And It doesnt show if we left as an absence.
During my senior year of high school (2009), myself and another junior were permitted to run calls from school. In order to do so, it required signatures from both our fire chief and parents. It was considered an excused absence, thus work could be made up. However, we both agreed that we would not run calls during tests. We also only left for calls that were in our first due or a multi-alarm (3+) mutual aid request. We were permitted to run courtesy lights from school to the station. Hope that helps.
We don't have very many juniors, but no they are absolutely not allowed to leave class at all. State law here in Tennessee says that your employer cannot punish you for being late to work because you are on a fire call, as long as you bring a written note from your department. But that does not mean you can leave work to go to a fire. But as far as school goes, no, absolutely not. My department will not even excuse them for being late to school. Our juniors are not allowed to do anything on scene anyway.
I never was pulled out fo school when I was a "Cadet" (Under 18 member). However Once I was 18 I was still a senior but technically an adult. In my school system once you were 18 you could sign yourself in, out, and sign your own report card. In my FD once you were 18 you could live at the fire house. So needless to say that if there was a fire, or good call I either left school early, or came in late.

Cadets in VA are allowed very few priviledges....no red lights, no riding after 10 on school nites, no hazmat calls, and no entering a burning structure without officers discretion.
Okanogan Volunteer Fire Department has had a High School Program for about 10 years they have to be 16yrs old valid drivers license, maintain a 2.0gpa with no failing classes. They our allowed to respond day or night durning class as long as the teacher has signed a premission slip for them to leave. They our allowed to go on EMS, Structure fires first floor entry only no above or below grade entry and Wildland fires. We currently have 7 students in the program. They train once a week with the reqular fire crews. They may respond with a single green light non flashing and they our allowed to make up missed work.
As a Junior we were not allowed to leave school for ANY fire calls. Even if there was a alarm at school we had to stay with our class. My Chief would of had my head if I tried to....I also would of either been put on suspension or booted from the department.
Agreed that jrs should not be running calls during school hours. We do not allow them to run calls for 2 hours after school is let out. Their grades must be acceptable, and there is a minimum to how much school they can miss.
I am a junior in bridgewater NJ. We are actually suspended from the fire company if we leave school and use that as an excuse. Even after we graduate fire school, if we are still in high school we are not allowed to leave. There really is no reason to.... there are other more qualified members that can handle whatever the situation may be. If it is a structure or fatal, the fire chief may overlook you leaving but there is no reason to leave if it is just smells and bells
"They our allowed to go...Structure fires first floor entry only no above or below grade entry
So a 16/17 year old can enter a burning building (so long as they stay on the first floor)? Do federal child labor laws, OSHA and NFPA have any influence there?
