Is It Appropriate?
Is it appropriate to wonder how many members actually read the "news" section and some of the most excellent blogs being offered by the team from FireRescue?
Since we have no way of knowing without comments whether our blog is read or not, I have to wonder.
But, I can't help but notice how we trip over ourselves to post replies in the discussions to some of the most inane and mundane topics.
So, my question is: if you don't read the news or the blogs, WHY NOT?
If you visit this site to "learn", then exactly what is it you wish to learn?
Or do you simply want to be entertained?

It would be nice to have some sort of counter on the blogs to see if they are being read. As far as posting to the inane and mundane topics (which I do all the time) I think it is done mainly as a time filler that doesn't require much though put into an answer.
Posting to some of the discussions do require alot of thought and analysis. I believe that many are hesitant to do so out of fear of saying something wrong. I've been a vol for over 15 years an attend every class I can. But even so my training and experience is limited compared to what most of the career guys have. I know that I have to think twice before responding and maybe even doing some research first to make sure what I say is right.
The blogs & news are my first stop everyday. I will look through them and read the ones that catch my attention. I have learned quite a bit from everyone here over the last year. Some of the ideas I have taken to our department and adjusted our training because of it. After soaking in the information then I slip into more of a socializing mode and use this more for entertainment.
Anyways, just my view on things.

I must admit Chief, i'm guilty. I like to entertain, while at the same time learn. I was known as the class clown
back when I was in school. I know that often we get off the discussion, and go back, and forth with entertaining ourselves, and others, but it's its all in good taste. I am not big on blogging for the most part.
When you come down to it, I would think answering or replying back, and forth to a discussion is some what the same as blogging. I hope I haven't offended any one.

You are "right on" Chief...sometimes we (I) reply out of frustration. One key thing to remember is that in the written word in forums such as this, we don't always get the tone or inflection that is meant by the writer...other times we do.
The "entertainment" value is sometimes too too easy to give into.
As far as learning..YES...I have learned things in FFN from Chief Officers down to explorers and juniors. Sometimes good, sometimes not.
I love to go through the news and blogs to see exactly what is going on not only in the "fire world" but the world of the individual as well. I think we all have alot to learn..if we just listen. The advice that I have given to some younger members holds true for us that are more advanced in years on the job and just "years" period...LISTEN.
I have started discussions that were meant to go "one way" and have been totally turned on me, and I have also turned others around. Sometimes I just hope that the youngers (or the olders) are willing to listen and learn from my experiences and opinions as well.
We all have a lot to learn.

The short answer to your question is... both. I most certainly read the news and some of the blogs. I do learn from these pages, and post a response when I have something relevant to say. Many times it may take me a few days to mull it over before posting a reply, or decide that what has already been said has been said for me and as such no reason for me to be a parrot.
But this being a "social" site, it is entertaining what some people will talk about. I may glance at the topic in my email that so and so has added (or replied) to a topic.... Most don't interest enough me to click the link, and others trick me into thinking it might be something worthwhile. But some will illicit a reply from me, usually once, rarely a second or third. Even the rantings by some about grammar, spelling, why do we... etc., can be downright comical.
Is it appropriate to wonder? Certainly. What do I wish to learn, most anything I didn't know before, and that sometimes includes the human intellectual nature, or lack thereof, which can be entertaining.
To paraphrase Forest Gump, this site is like a box of chocolates, you never what you are going to get.

What I had noticed and the reason for my post is that there hasn't been too many new discussion threads started and it is very apparent that some of the usual bloggers have been absent.
With the start of the vacation season coming up, I expect that it will get worse, unless new members open up. I just hope that they do a search first.
The search feature at this site is very good.
But, as I said, some of the topics have been re-hashed; in fact, I wish Dave would create a forum just for the singles, those looking to become single again or relationships that need attention. I promise I will avoid it.
But while I have you all here: does my motorcycle make me look fat?

I am too guilty of relplying to entertaining discussions. One thing that irks me is some of them get out of hand. There have been some very personal attacks. I do agree that some discussions belong in groups, that is why we have them, but at the same time somethings are brought up to get opinion from all members. By the way, I do try to monitor all areas of the site. I am still learning, and will continue to learn everyday. The members that choose not to explore everything available are the ones that are missing out.
