I HATE The Hero Label....
I HATE the hero label.
I've never hidden that in these forums. It's wrong. It's misleading.
And then my worst nightmare came true this week.....
My own agency started a new campaign for the public to show their support and some misinformed public servant came up with this gem:

The reaction from the members has been strong.
The reactions from the staff members has been strong.
We'll see how long this campaign goes for before they pull it. My gut feel is that it's here to stay- unfortunately. :-(

I dont like the hero tag but it sure beats getting no recognition at all and being abused by the average citezen.
But if there wasn't heros who would the little kids look up to? I dont think there is anything better than showing them around the trucks and station and seeing them all dressed up as mini firefighters.

LOL - yes, I guess Lutan should be on the posters... if they are looking for a real man to be their poster boy
the ad is just cheesy...
but then again, I think that of lots of ads... especially ads geared towards men using crude humor...
who is there target audience is what I really want to know ???
did they bother to do any research with their target audience ???

Hero is a strange "tag" to give people..
You aren't a hero for being a firefighter, cop, paramedic, soldier or similar.. You're just doing your job..
Normally those who are "heroes" are actually just people who disregarded safety and rules to help others, and who are lucky enough to manage it and not get killed...
But I must admit I envy the way people look up to firefighters in the US.
In Denmark the only response we get from the public it either being yelled at for being to slow (after all, we can't drivt 200 MPH, it takes some time to come), or people throw stones at us simply because we have blue lights and therefore are bad and evil..

Being called a Hero is not for me. Having done EMS for 30years and FF/some law enforcement too. For me its just my job. I say thanks, and tell them the real heroes are the Men/Women who have given their lives for our way of life in this country. I have the Freedom to do any job, say what I want, and go to church. When one has lost there life protecting what many of us take for granted. Being in the public service area is by choice. Beacuse I am able to get to choose.

Now, Luke, I am banking on the fact that we are close enough friends (or at least you tolerate me) so that you will take this video clip in the light humor that I mean it to be presented in... and will not be offended and feel like I stepped over the line... then hate me (for too long)...
I LOVE the song "Holding Out for a Hero"... and I truly believe we need heros... so Ralph inspired me to play on You Tube and I found (by accident) prisoners singing MY FAVORITE song
