I feel I owe you all an apology
I'm so truly sorry to FFN and all of the members here. I feel totally responsible for inviting a member(Brian Dunker) to join here, that has recently became a major disgrace to the firefighter family. I am truly appalled at his recent activities, and for the shame he has brought among us all. I'm asking you all to please forgive me..as I honestly considered him as my friend, being a co-worker and fellow firefighter. My heart goes out to all that know him, and trusted him. May God be with his family throughout this trying time ..thank you all, and God bless us all, Cathy

I totally agree. 22 seems way too young to be a captain. My vollie department unfortunatly just lost both of our captains due to personal family situations. Instead of moving two lieutenants up that may not be ready for the job, our chief has simply decided we wont have captains for a while. Oure three lieutenants are about in the same position as you James. I think the oldest guy is 28 but all are professional firefighters that have years of expierence on the job and have logged alot more hours in fires then most guys I know. I would hate to see someone take over a position they are not ready for and end up causing problems/accidents that could have easily been avoided.

I don't belive that age or rank and how long he held the position is the problem. There a plenty of yunger firefighters out there with the knowledge and the ability to hold these offices. This is a problem that has plegued the fire service for many years and nine times out of ten it involves a younger firefighter. Wanting to be part of or have stories like the older guys of "THE BIG ONE" I would tend to believe play a role in the thought proscess. They are just trying to be one of the guys and fit in. Iam definatley not sticking up for what he has done and he should pe punished for his actions.
There was a similar situation at a neighboring company of mine a few years back and it is a shame that this happens but we the officers and older generation need to mentor these guys/girls and give them direction and not just ridicule them. Lead them in the manner you were led and then some. Give them direction, include them. All they want is a chance to be us and with our help they can be some day and hopefully better.
Imagine were you would be if nobody showed you the way. Would you have the ability to be a quality officer as I am sure you probably are if nobody was willing to help you, because no matter how good we all think we are at what we do it was not all self tought. Someone was there to teach us and guide us down the right path and we need to be more into the future of the fire service and not ourselves.
Sure some will slip through the cracks or not able to be helped from time to time but with the older generations help we can limit these tragedies from happening.
The future is in our hands lead them right and they will follow. Be safe out there. -
