I was wondering how many fires you guys have been inside of sense becoming a interior firefighter. I have been in 4 fires and have been interior for just about 3 yrs. 3 of which were this year. This is not a contest either. Haha.
it used to be that we had a lot more structure fires... two things off the top of my head have influenced these numbers.
1. socio economic status of the area (poorer areas have more fires because people are sometimes really ignorant) and (richer areas have more arson specially with the current economic issues that are hitting us)
2. time of year (cold weather brings on more chimney fires)
and as far as how many... 30 years of doing this gig... too many to remember...
umm ive only being in for a year and being into 2 one on branch as no 1 and one as no 2 as far as interior attack gos
2 bush fires worth mentioning
2 decent vehicle fires
and a handful of squirt and they are out
what we spend a lot of time on here really is mvas
Only 3 interior attacks, here. Most of the fires we've had recently have been surround and drown. I have been inside 2 of these, though. The first was helping with overhaul. A week later, we had a non-entry double house fire with a fatality. I had to help search on that one.
Defensive?! What's Defensive mean? LOL We are blessed in the valley to have enough stations to have short response times and therefore few fires here go defensive... last year my crew went interior in aroun 10-12 structure fires. However ego should never determine an offensive strategy. I was on our ALS brush truck for a shift and while the engine was out we caught a blowing garage fire 1 block from the station. since our engine was on a call we were first in and a with mutual aid we got a neighboring cities engine crew behind us by 3 minutes. They fumbled around with the hose, which my partner helped straighten out, while the captain and I did a quick Interior search. I opened the garage door from the Interior and was met with thick black smoke (guy owned a plumbing business and was storing small amoutns of Jet feul in coffee cans) I closed the door as the Cpt came down the stairs and told me to go into the garage... I chukled and said "Hey skip. As soon as your boys get a charged hose in here I'll do just that!" Eventually I swooped the nozzle from their booter and we got a quick knock. In truth the Cpt's enthusiasm to get to the fire with or without a hose was a dangerous environment to work in. I love to fight fire but I love my family more. Just my little rant.
