My Battalion Chief brought up an interesting question:

How do we respond if a person is injured in a large foam pit

I don't know if you have seen the large foam pits used for anything from gymnastics to learning to do a backflip on a dirt bike.  I think most people know what I'm talking about the foam comes in large blocks...not sure about construction details...

- Accessing the Patient:

-Stabilization/Immobilization:

-Extricating the Patient:

-Necessary Equipement:

-Possible Alternatives:

similar topics may be for large communities: trampoline rooms, foam pits, large ball pits... I suppose even a ballon castle could be tricky with a suspected spinal injury...

I was even thinking of the larger foam blocks, just type foam pit crash into you tube, there is quite abit out there, but this demostrates sustaining a possible head/neck injury and landing in the pit.
Not sure if this is any different than say an extrication of a patient into other entrapment hazards, like mountain climbing and fallen on or into large rocks, fallen down over the embankment into trees, or stuck in mud. The due no harm mentality kicks in. You simply can't unload a foam pit everytime a person claims an injury. There needs to be a good assessment of injury / diability and then weigh the factors involved in the extrication. Dependant on the disability, yes may be we take much longer to unload or remove the hazards to provide the best care. It has to match the possible injury. Sometimes we lean away from the textbook (because it is impossible to do) to get the job done.
Yeah, I think we might just have to line up a training and try it. I've never been in a foam pit, so I have no idea what to expect, but, like you say, we use our experience from other situations and apply them to new ones. It may even be a little bit like water rescue using the patient's arms or your body to stabilize until a backboard can be maneuvered in place.

Thanks for the response! Calls to these incidents aren't very common around here, I wonder if anyone has responded to such an incident?
