CLEARWATER, Fla. - A 70-year-old man is recovering from injuries after jumping from a second story window to escape a fire at a southwest Florida apartment building.
Clearwater Fire Rescue officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, which broke out early Sunday morning. The man jumped from his apartment to escape the flames, but did not receive serious injuries.
The fire destroyed his apartment and officials deemed it uninhabitable. The Red Cross is assisting the man.

When I first started out in the fire service, our dept. still had one of those big ole life nets. We would practice with it once a year maybe...by holding it properly ( there really was a right and wrong way to hold that sucker too) and have one of our guys actually jump into it.. well.. fall into it...
Then we would put it away back on the truck that rarely got used.
Now, I am actually interested in knowing if there is still anyone out there that has these devices in service? lol I think even that thing would have been a benefit to this elderly fellow.
Hope he recovers nicely.
