I just started the Georgia Chapter for the Firefighter Cancer SUpport Network www.firefightercancersupport.org Still need more state reps. Only 20 states now have it out of 50. It is a FREE resource for firefighters with cancer and their immediate family members if they have cancer. Great fundraising for a great cause. I tie ours into our Relay for Life team! Help spread the word. Especailly for the younger generation of firefighters to wear their SCBA's during overhaul and to get cancer screenings early to detect and cure cancer!!
Good for you! I think what you do is fantastic.
One question I am unsure of, and frankly have been to lazy to google, is this: Are there any states that have presumtive legislation for firefighter cancers in place? Here in Canada there are a few provinces that already have implemented it, and the list of cancers continues to grow. By that, I mean the list of cancers that are placed on the list continues to grow. It started out for career firefighters, but it was not long until it included ALL firefighters. If the firefighter develops certain cancers, it is automatically (sort of - there are conditions such as length of service, etc) considered that the cancer was work related.
Would that sort of program work down there? Forgive me, but I am really uneducated when it comes to your health care system and workers comp system etc.
Some food for thought.
I think it would be / should be, a world wide program and hopefully someday it will be.
My opinion of course.
Food for thought for you.
Keep up the great work!
