I don't mean to be rude here, but why do so many fire, police and EMS sites just down right stink?

They're not engaging. They're hard to follow. Some don't even exist or are "under construction".

No money? No techie geeks that like to fight fires?

FFN is set up well and at least is easy to use and doesn't make me nauseated when I stop in, but some are just done very poorly.

Try www.fortbayouvfd.com

Not the flashiest I'm sure, but it gets all the approval from the guys. Sorry the photos are lacking on the site. It's easier for us to put them on myspace vs. the website

ADD US if you'd like

here's the one the county maintains for all the depts. Very generic but its the government for ya lol... www.co.jackson.ms.us/ds/firedistrict.html
Nick,

Your site is much better than some I've seen! I wouldn't complain about that one too much. Of course there is "geek" stuff that I could complain about, but not too many firefighters are geeks. I must be an oddball. ;o )

Chris
John,

I'll be sure to send something your way!

Are those sites done with GoDaddy's template system? I have a client in South Bend who has used their template system and I found it difficult to navigate and/or understand some times. A bit too restrictive on what I can and cannot do at times.... :o /

Chris
Yes, our furniture store site was done using godaddy's website tonight templates. Our toy site uses their shopping cart system. Both have their limitations but for someone who is technically impared it can at least get you started.

John
Thanks, Chris. We had the site professionally done by a local company.
Nice site Chris. My wife is working on one for our dept. as well. It's still a work in progress. But it's www.cowanfire.com.
Ok so I'm the wife here. Trying to get this site going is kinda hard when I don't know what I'm doing. The runs page is going to take some time, I can't figure out how to add in a spreadsheet... So go easy on me I've only been working on this for a week now. LOL Oh yeah and I don't have any pics of the guys yet just of the trucks. But if you go feel free to sign the guestbook!!!!

And Chris no I'm not a techie geek. LOL Just a bored stay at home mommy.
www.musquashfire.ca/ Try this one Chris. Hello from Canada

Chris,

I designed and built this site for my department back in January, they had been talking about doing one for about 2 years but know one had the drive, until i said i would do it. I`m thinking of offering to a couple of our local departments my services because theres could be alot better, some do not even have a site. We pay a hosting co. about 25.00 a month. Check it out and let me know what you think.

John,

"...but for someone who is technically impared it can at least get you started."
LOL Oh no, I understand completely. There are more and more DIY systems out there and that's the cool thing about the web. Granted, it cuts in on my biz a little bit, but I don't think it will ever be 100% user created. At least, I hope not or I am screwed! ;o )
Well hello there "wife".

To get a "spreadsheet" style list in a site you are often times better off using tables. You can use CSS, but that might a bit out of your "geek realm" right now.

What are you using to develop the site? A program or a free service or something?

~Chris
Hey, not too shabby at all! I've seen much MUCH worse. LOL

Just one little tip - the music - give visitors the ability to mute/stop the music if they want to. That's one of the concrete rules in web design: Give the user TOTAL control.

Besides that, not too bad at all! I assume you do all of the updating and what not also?

~Chris
