Im looking for a good work out, primarily to keep my heart in shape for the stress of SCBA. Just wondering what everbody else was doing to stay in shape for firefighting. Ive read that some firefighters work out in SCBA. Is this a good idea? Any information or ideas would be great.

well im a volunteer fire fighter in june lake, ca and me and my wife are gonna start doing the workout called P90X you can download them on limewire if you wanted and you can hear testimonials at youtube.com to get feed back and see results. hope this helps
Try searching this topic her on FFN...there are a thread or two on it. I'll put it here though like I posted it there. CrossFit is one of the best programs I've ever seen. I found it in the military, but it has been gaining ground in the fire service that past few years.

The website explains the philosophy of the program in great detail in one of it's position papers. They also have an online newsletter, video instructions of all the workout, Q&A, everything you need to know from scratch is on the website. They also have a WOD (Workout Of the Day) every day posted on the site, in a 3-on, 1-off pattern.

theres actually a program that Byron, IL FF i know are using....its called P90X.....its a 90 day prgram that makes u work ur A$$ off but they all have said it really pays off in the end, even if you cant entirely keep up with the instructor guy in the videos. there is another workout program called insanity...i have not heard of anyone using this one...to me it seems to be similar to the P90X. i hope this helps!
it's properly named (insanity) It is along the same lines as P90X ( I have that too) in that you work your A** off, just in different ways than P90X. One of the things I like about them is that you don't need a thousand dollar weight system. Just simple cheap tools.
I recommend either of them.
At the very least,... run.
good luck
I personally do an IAFF workout that I fould online. If I find the link, I'll send it to ya.
Why not post the link here for all to see? Maybe others are interested too, such as myself.
Thanks for the input everybody.
Excellent point Derek, thanks!
Go to Youtube and search Extreme Firefighter Workouts. This is some of the stuff I do to keep in shape, on and off the job.
crossfit.com i personally had awesome results from it, its a free website new work out everyday, its very popular in the calli area. check it out
P90X is a great workout. We used to do it in the station. I'm also a huge fan of crossfit. Although, be sure you know how to perform the exercises so as not to cause injury. I watched a guy at the gym yesterday doing powercleans and was very happy when one of the trainers came over to correct, he was heading for an injury for sure.
Running and cycling are also great. Don't forget the cardio endurance. I've seen big strong guys fail the CPAT on the stairs because all they did was squats and bicep curls.
