Family Fighting Together
Ok, I have talked about this with a few people and I'm wondering if anyone else's family is this way. I was born into the fire service. My dad has been a firefighter for over 30 years now. My uncle is the chief and another uncle is assistant chief. I have several cousins on the department. Not to mention my mom, sister and little brother are all firefighters. Its kinda funny to go through our dept roster and half of the people on it are my family by blood. To us it's almost a challenge to see who can run the most calls. When we are all together and a call goes off well it looks kinda funny when you pop the trunk on the car if we are all riding together and see us pull five sets of turnouts out and try to figure out who's gear is who's especially with the same last name on everything. Now with all the funny stuff that is associated with it, I think that when the bad calls hit that we actually have it pretty good. We don't have to worry about not wanting to talk about an incident with each other. We all know what the other has just experienced. I know that some people think that having the chief and assistant chief as my uncles and my dad as a Lt. that I would have it made and that favoritism would be the case but I can assure you that its not. They are actually harder on us than anyone else. But I think that is one of the things that makes us work so well together. It also brings us closer as a family and a department. We all know that everyone at the firehouse is a family. Well at our firehouse it really is the case. Not to mention that my sister and I both run EMS together and try to be on a call team together as much as possible. I have learned so much from my family about the fire service and I feel pretty damn lucky. I would like to know who else has a firehouse like this?

We have a family on our department that spans 4 generations. The Assistant Chief is the oldest. His daughter and son-in-law plus his grandson (on a paid department also) are on our department. His great grandson is almost old enough to become a junior firefighter. Other than that we have several husband and wife couples.

We have 3 Coon's - 3 Roudenburgs - Our first and second assistant chiefs are father and son and are my cousins. So I guess not as much has you have but we have some.

Family participation must be mostly very fulfilling. My wife is a member of our department. She jokingly says she's only there to keep an eye on me, but it sure is nice when she's showing interest in helping out. A young son showed a little interest at one time, but moved on after just a couple of years.

Thanks. It really is amazing to get to gear up and pour your heart and soul into something right along side of your family. I consider myself pretty dang lucky to be able to learn from my uncles and my dad as well as teach my brother and sister. Unfortunately there is not enough of that in our world these days.

The dept. asked my wife to join and she said no because she did not want me to join the quilt guild! We have a few husband and wife teams on the dept. and one captain has a son on the dept. As far as I can tell I am the only member of my family to be a on a fire department. My father was in the National Guard for over twenty years so he can relate to me on some of the aspects of training, leadership, communications and teamwork which is a big help to me. I have a four year old daughter and a son that is a year and a half so maybe someday I can start a tradition as worthwhile as yours Jake! I bet a weekend barbeque at your place is interesting!

Haha you got that right. We do weekly meetings and training and it's more of a family reunion sometimes.
