Does anyone know of a standard that requires fuel tanks on cars to be cut for training to be drained? We always do it for safety reasons, I was just wondering if there was a standard or not. I cannot find what I am looking for.
The NFPA standard for removing fuel tanks, drive shafts, etc. is addressed for burning a car as a firefighting prop.
1670 would be the analog for rescue training, but I can't find a reference to specifics of removing fuel tanks, etc.
We typically do not remove fuel tanks, but we're careful to roll the vehicle to the opposite side from the fuel filler if we put one on its side for advanced stabilization training. If the car is in running order, we run it out of fuel prior to training with it.
We don't remove them, we just puncture and drain them. Due to the people that have always made us do it, and now as an instructor I do it too, I have to assume that this is not someting they came up with. Our department is very good about following training guidelines, we have use 1403 for years for burns.
