Does your department have members with superstitions(Spelling?) that if you watch a movie or say the word "fire" or"run" feel that a fire or med run is inevitable? I have heard some say every time we watch "Ladder 49" we have a structure fire shortly thereafter.

I had a couple of movies that I never got to finish till recently (Blazing Saddles was one) because every stinking time I tried to watch one we got a run. Now, have I walked in at the start of a shift and "had that feeling" oh hell yeah I have! Is it always right, of course not. Have I had those calls where at the time of dispatch I have that feeling that this is going to be a bad one even if dispatch makes it out to not be, you bet! I would not say it is so much superstition, but just a gut feeling, and all I can say is listen to your gut! It might not be right all the time, but it has got me out of some crappy situation that had no other outward indicators otherwise.
My father had a song with this supertitious side . It translates in english like " i´m a man, and nothing ever happens to me"
He´s retired career FF, and that song were prohibited, that no one on his shift don´t sing it aloud..
To me, i have this cold shivers, and in next five- to fifteen minutes comes a call..
A few movies. Amityville horror and Stephen King´s the Shining. Never finished those, everytime comes call´s
not so much when I am watching movies or anything like that. But whenever most of our people are out of town or otherwise engaged to the point of not being able to respond, we get run's.
When I ran EMS the person who said "quiet" was taking their life in their hands...it either meant the call from he*l or 22 pts in 12 hours. The worst one was when my husband (fiancee at the time) who is a firefighter said to me "hope you don't have any calls tonight"...we had a tornado...very rare in the northeast!
We have to call in fire reports by phone. I'm always being told that I should never call in all the reports, I should always leave the latest one or we'll get another call. That's a fairly common superstition in my service. Does it happen? Surprisingly often. And to be paged when in the middle of calling in those reports? Also surprisingly often. Oh, and we also have the one about get two calls, there's a third coming.
My wife is really good about getting that feeling before the pager goes off and she's not a firefighter!!! Sometimes I do get it and sometimes it's just wishful thinking. Lol
Seems like everytime I get all the reports up to date we get slammed with multiple calls. I have had that feeling some nights when I go to sleep that we are going to get a ripper and we do. Humm? premonition or just happenstance? The calls always seem to come in three's. We get two calls and you can be sure that we will get a third before the night is out. Why's that? Just funny stuff!
Hell yes so far every Feb during the Nascar first seasonal race about the last 50 laps we have had either a structure or MVA and had to wait to return to know winner it all started the year Dale jr won..other times are christmas and july 4th
Not at all. We've watched Backdraft and Ladder 49 on shift before with no worries of superstitiousness! We often talk about previous "runs" or "fires" with no worries.
