I figured since I'm new here, what a better way to get noticed than to start a thread that will probably ignite emotion.  Having been experienced both as a firefighter and an ems provider, I think I have a good idea about this issue.  Fire or EMS, who is better?  Neither.  I have run into the guys while I worked private ambulance that wanted my partner and I to wait outside the house with our gurney until they finished tx their patient.  They said ambulance people don't know what they are doing and are just in the way.  While in medic school, I had a f/f tell me that if I wasn't a firefighter, I was stupid.  Conversely, while working Fire and running a few medical calls, ran across a medic and his partner that were included in the scene and proceeded to argue with me and my crew in front of the patient!  After the call I overheard them say, "figures, what can you expect out of fire, they don't know what they're doing....they just want to show off to keep up the 'hero' image."

So what do you all think?  Me personally, I feel we are all equally important members of a large team of public safety.  However now that we have blurred the lines of EMS/Fire with the advent of ALS fire departments, it seems the old rivalry is being fueled again.

what is your feedback?  and keep in mind, no one is stupid unless they are calling names and rude.

So you need attention New GUY ??? Well welcome !!!

I am sure we can generate some way to make you feel welcome. BUT YOU MUST PICK A SIDE - STARTING A NEUTRAL CONVERSATION WILL NOT START MUCH MISCHIEF... you must pour the gasoline in the "old rivalry" on one team...  lol  [but people are so pissed about the house burning down without the FD, that you may have to re-post this in a few weeks when they are done ranting about that]

As far as Fire vs. EMS - it depends on what trouble I am in as to WHO IS MORE AWESOME !

Today I am on TEAM FIRE - since my house is filled with smoke from a forest fire nearby... and the fire department is rocking it and EMS is just standing around watching it !!!

I really dont know...I love both sides Being a Ceritifed Firefighter and an EMR I really dont have a favorite side. I mean we run a hell of a lot more EMS calls but when the pager goes off for a fire my heart pounds. But when it goes off for CPR in progress it pounds too...Oh man I have no idea....I LOVE THEM BOTH

tell ya what as a FF/First responder I cant wait till ems shows up to take over!

Niether side is more important. We all have a mission and role in the emergency services an should work together to achieve that end. That said, I have seen those who generated a negative response by those around them because of thier attitude an ego. The old saying" 1 bad apple in every basket" is alive and well everywhere you go in our society today. I choose to overlook these boneheads attitude and get the job done as safely an proffesionally as I can. I expect that of my crews as well.

Around here, we do Fire & EMS. Some shifts you're assigned to the Fire apparatus, or to the Ambulance, depending on what the Batt. Chief's needs are that day.
Like Karr said EMS can come get the patient and I will go back to sleep and I love them for that.

But as the saying goes (and this is just a joke) You can always tell the medics from real firefighters because they are the ones all nice and clean in shinny bunker gear in rehab when theres fire blowing out a couple windows. (again a joke)

Fire and EMS is in most places one team now and neither one is better than the other. But like fire and police its just a fun thing to make jokes about.

Some may take it alittle further than othersas with every topic in life.

I will say though theres no need for the unprofessionalism in front of a patient. Take it back to the fire house and keep it between the brothers and sisters. And next time they are like that just put the trucks stabbilizer through the side of the ambulance lol (just kidding)
amateur...pure amateur...that's not how you get something started around here....and for the record...which is best...? Well, from my point of view it depends on the hat I have on at the moment; and that sir is not ego speaking it is fact.......LOL
This is going to spark some emotion on FFN? Damon in the few years for which I have been around. Most issues of ego are typically from "newbies". New medics who are trying to be the man and not realizing some of the firefighters may be firefighter/medics and/or vice-versa. New firefighters who may cop an attitude with the bus.

Blurring the lines of fire/ems is nothing new to some areas...
2 groups of people that are equally vital. If you can't get along, you should extend an olive branch and try to remember why we're all in Public Safety.
Both are as equally important in the grand scheme of things. As stated before all it takes is the one bad apple to get things stirred up and a lot of times that comes from the newer people. Think it comes down to a combination of ego and ignorance.
Does it matter who is better? we are all here for one reason pt.care and the best outcome for the patient to the best of our ability and training will allow, I think they call it customer service, and i treat patients the way i would want to be treated ,
I work with a combo station so they are both the same.
