LOS ANGELES - A Los Angeles County Sheriff's official says two people tried to ride out the firestorm in Big Tujunga Canyon in a backyard hot tub and were critically burned.

Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said Sunday that the pair "completely underestimated the fire" and the hot tub provided "no protection whatsoever."

The two individuals made their way to firefighters Saturday and were airlifted out by a sheriff's rescue helicopter.

Whitmore says the two people received adequate notification to evacuate from deputies but decided to stay.

Big Tujunga Canyon is on the southwestern edge of the fire burning in the mountains north of Los Angeles.

Another person narrowly escaped by driving through flames in a truck and was not injured.

these two...examples of Dumb and Dumber.....
Why would they think a hot tub would even protect them?
gee, you'd think in a fire that they'd pick a cold tub instead of a a hot tub. :)

Really, though it amazes the the stupidity of some people and then the danger that they put others in because of their stupidity.

John
Because it's no different to our stay or go policy- people don't get it. It's about education.
If only they had thought to bring a small bucket with them, that way they could have extinguished the fire when it got too close to them....duh!
John, I'd argue again that it's not stupidity. These people don't know any different. It's about education.

If they don't understand the dangers, the intensity, the processes, etc, how can they make an informed decision?
Lutan,
to a degree I'll agree that it is about education. But ignorance also plays a big role. They are use to seeing and hearing the stories each year as fires rage though their communities. There are orders for evacuations. Each year many homes get destroyed. It is easy to see the trail of devisation and know that one cannot fight the beast headon without the proper tools.

So yes, educate as best we can which will help, but you cannot educate past ignorance.

John
We have to educate John Q Public.....but first we need to speak their language.....Well....Does anyone know how to speak "Stupid"...? DUH...!!!!! Paul
Radio Staion I listen to one of the DJs came up with this. Hot tub, water, fire and people = SOUP!
