In a couple of months its going to be election time. We're going to starting hearing "we need change" but what people are really saying is "I should be in charge" I know of a company ( no names will be used to protect the guilty) that was doing pretty good. They could get 2 engines fully staffed during the day ( a big deal in thier area), staffed duty crew on thier turn and were called over other companies.
But change was needed, something was wrong, they weren't doing IT the way it was SUPPOSED to be done. That change consisted of several members leaving, scratching on runs day and at night, having to hire an ambulance crew with them staffing the engine during the day.
I'm not saying there are times when change is needed. Not liking a Chief is not need for change if he is doing a good job. When the equipment is sitting there is a need for change. Lack of motivated members means a need for change.
How do you change your company? Find out who the strongest decsion maker is and make the ideal his or hers. It might take awhile but it will happen. Keep mentioning it in passing. Then start saying remember "when you mentioned this"....they'll take it as thiers and get the ball rolling.
So come election time think about the real changes that need to be made.....
