ST. HELENA, Calif. - Three firefighters escaped serious injury when a Napa County firetruck rolled down a steep embankment around 1:30 a.m. Saturday.

Fire officials say three California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection firefighters on a Napa County firetruck were responding to a report of a fallen tree when the fire engine they were riding on went off a narrow road in an unincorporated part of the county.

One firefighter suffered a minor shoulder injury, while the other two were not hurt. Fire officials say the fire engine was equipped with airbags.

CalFire, the California Highway Patrol and Napa County officials will be investigating the accident.

Allow me to start by saying I am glad that there are no serious injuries from this. Now what does it take to get our driver operators to slow down and get there safely and stop allowing the adrenoline to control the out come of our scenes. lets all learn to take no more risk then what is necessary to achieve our goals. All of this for a fallen tree where do we draw the line on this. When do the departments start to take control and rein in on there guys and start making firefighters think instead of just doing. This mentality that we have will have to change soon how many firefighters have to die or come close before we do something; I am talking about real change not the make believe change that comes after all tragedies and then year later it as if nothing ever. We all need to wake up.
Aaron You nailed it!
What is readily apparent here is the lack of supervision by the engine's Captain. This is the part where maturity and experience are supposed to come into play. How hard is it to say slow down?

Road conditions , familiarity with roads, nature of call are all size up operations that we should be factoring in from the moment we respond to a call. Hind site is always 100% and I too am glad nobody was more seriously injured but apart from elements that are out of our control we can not and must not accept accidents as justifiable if we could positively have influenced the out come with a little bit of forethought.
