I decided to get the Cadet Program restarted with my department. This is the same program that other departments refer to as an Explorers Program. The biggest issue i have had so far is with training. They participate in the trainings with the other members of the department, but i pull them aside into their own group to go over the basics with them. I was wondering how other departments deal with cadet training and other aspects within the program. I believe that having a Cadet or Explorer program is a great program a department can have. I'm just making sure it's worth while for the kids involved. Any input or suggestions on this forum would be greatly appreciated. Stay Safe!
We treat the Juniors the same as the other Firefighters. They train, are equipped and are expected to be responsible just like anyone else. Since these kids are still in school they must maintain a C average in school and practice good citizenship both in the community and school. They do not have the privileges the regular Firefighters have in being Firefighter I but we encourage them just the same. Most if not all will eventually turn 18 and be able to achieve their State Certification of FF I or above. Currently we have 7 members in the program. Its a worthwhile program if its monitored and properly run. Otherwise it can be a liability. Good Luck!
