EL CAJON, Calif. -- A Cal Fire battalion chief got more than he bargained for Monday when he stopped to help with a traffic accident and someone stole his official vehicle for a brief joy ride, authorities said.
The vehicle -- a pickup truck with a light bar -- was stolen from Jamacha Road in unincorporated El Cajon shortly before 8 a.m. and found about three to four minutes away near Hillsdale Road, said Cal Fire Battalion.......... Because the battalion chief had left his light bar flashing, other vehicles quickly moved out of the way for the joyriding thief, Schuler said.

There was no damage to the truck despite initial reports it was abandoned in a drainage ditch, according to Schuler, who said the thief got away.
If your lights are on, the engine is on. If you don't keep the engine on, you come back to a dead battery. Does your department have a policy to prevent this from happening. Do you carry a second set of keys in your wallet, etc.

There are devices that can allow police cars to be running on a scene and if someone trys to steal the car it will shut off right there.
