What text books did you use in your training for any of the EMT levels or in training for your firefighter certification? Have you used any other books other than those promoted by the agency where you got your training? Which books were the most informative? Easiest to use? Which text books would you recomend?

I am looking for EMT-Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic training text books as well as firefighter training text books.

Thanks!

I am looking for EMT-Basic, Intermediate, and Paramedic training text books as well as firefighter training text books.

I would suggest going with the latest version out there. While many things don't really change in the textbooks, there are still some changes. It doesn't make much sense getting a paramedic book from the mid 80's if you are looking for a certification today.

Question is though, why do you want the books? Are you looking to self study for certifications before going through a class, or looking to establish a personal library? If you plan on going through a certification class, I would wait until then to get a book. By then you would know exactly which version they are using and what book to get. You would know this either before class or can get one at class.

Another suggestion would be to check out your local library for such books, there may be some there, where you can peruse them, but they may not have the latest info. Otherwise there is a possibility of a used texts that you can pick up cheap, especially if the same text is being used for your class.

However, if just interested in having some books for personal reference or library AND you wish to get a certification, I would suggest waiting until you sign up for a class to get a book. If going that route, you do find that you can build a library pretty quick.

Check with your state fire academy also I know Massachusetts has changed over from IFSTA to Jones and Bartlett for the state firefighter certification
I am looking for books to use for personal reference. I staill have one year before I can start the training to become certified, but I have become very interested in the fields and want to know more. I have tried my local libraries, all they have are the practice exams.
all Engine drivers should go to www.streetsmartpo.com

I think the McGraw-Hill EMT book is what Washington still uses for EMT though I don't know what the current edition is (8 or maybe 9 by now?) It's a pretty good book but you'd be best off finding out which book your state uses.

As far as firefighting books, you can't really go wrong with the IFSTA books. The FF Essentails 5th edition came out last year so it will be in effect for several years and I believe most states use that as their recognized book for certification. It is a good book that covers everything you need for testing.

If you go to www.firebooks.com you will be able to find all kinds od different manuals, history books, and just general books on firefighting stories and lore that are really good if your looking for a start to a library. John makes a good point too. You will gain quite a few books from classes you sign up for, especially if they are through your state academy.

Good luck!
