Best Fire Dept.?
Brother's and Sisters,
I will soon have the opportunity with my job to move anywhere in 50 United States that I want. And since I'm a volunteer firefighter i've decided to move to the best fire dept. location.
For this I need your help.
You can submit your dept., a neighboring dept., or any that you know of. But there are a few requests.
#1. It must be a great dept. to volunteer for. Since I'm moving for this reason, I don't want to go to a bad dept. Now I understand that every dept. will have it's problems but the less the better.
#2. It must be at least a volunteer dept., or combo will be ok too. 1 required duty shift wil be ok too, I tend to favor just volunteer- but I think I can meet 1 day per week duty shift.
#3. Fire/EMS/Rescue depts. will be considered a plus.
4. Tell me what makes this dept. so good. (Fellow Firefighters, Equipment, Community, Local Govt. Support?)
Ant and all info will be appreciated. P.S. STAY SAFE!!!

wow... Not gonna lie to you man, this is tuff for people to answer. There are WAY to many VOL departments out there for us to be telling you which one is best. It sounds like to me you know what you want in a VOL department so look for that and you should be satisfied. But are you really basing your move off of a Good vol fire dept? not trying to be mean but there are so many VFD around the US, I think what the best thing to do here is to look for another reason to move. Like family, economy, population, rural, urban, whatever. then once you have found a a place to move to for one of those reasons, check out the local VFD around that area. But thats just an idea.

Country Fire Authority Victoria Australia..... 50,000 Volunteers 1220 brigades a whole state to live in. we are well funded. well equiped, and all in it to have fun with big red toys :)

I've considered all that before, but I really have no strings attached, so the volunteer dept. was what I based my decision off of. Thanks for the info. I'm leaning towards Anchorage, KY, Valley Station, KY, or Prince George's County, Maryland

I can offer a coupld of suggestions some very well known and some not so well known.
First the obvious PG County Maryland Specifically Kentland and Berwyn Heights VFD....you will see a ton of work.
Rouss Hook and Ladder Winchester Virgnia....The only ladder company serving this small city they have NO ENGINE only ladder trucks. Very traditional...see some decent work.
Falmouth Volunteer Fire Dept. Stafford County Virginia......See alot of work....career guys run the ambo....house 2 engines, a heavy rescue, and boat. Known as the Kentland of the south.
Bowling Green VFD Bowling Green Virginia.....moderate work....engine rescue and truck work....very dedicated to there people

I wouldn't recommend California. The places that do have a VFD are going to be very rural with few calls/year.

Ours of course!!!! Grapevine Fire Department in Madisonville, KY
We have Fire/Rescue
Totally Volunteer (we do want our members active)
We have a very close group of individuals we have several different professionals, EMT, Paramedics, and I am a RN. We have a Hopkins County Fire School where are departments can get annual training in addition to trainings offered at our 14 surrounding departments in the county. We do have our problems as I am sure all do but I am very proud to be part of a great department. Our community(for the most part) is very supportive this year we had a Community Fire Prevention program that was free to the public where we educated the community on fire prevention, the other local departments was invited to attend.

Bellevue, Nebraska- They run out of five stations also have thier own training tower/complex. Very well funded with mostly all new apparatus. they do fire /rescue/EMS and see alot of work. They are the busiest VFD in the area and also run dual response with other VFD's that border thier district.

I have to say you make your dept good or bad .. No matter where you go you are the dept in a simple way of saying it... I think Oxbow is great.. WE have very little members and we have old equipment ,but when I run out that door with that truck and show up to scene we are the best.... So head for a area that you want to go to and then make what ever Dept. you end up with the best.....

Sorry...We interview prospective members not vice-versa......Ours IS the BEST Fire Department in the US...if you don't believe me just ask any of my Brothers/Sisters there......Paul
