I have recently been moved to a new station with a completly different demagraphic and fire problem then what I am used to.

One of the most significant hazards is a 2 floor below grade parking garage with 3 stairwells one of wich is attached to the main body of a hospital on all levels. It is sprinkled but lacks standpipes in the stairwells.

Our obvious plan in the event of a car fire is to protect the main stairwell from impregnating the hospital with smoke, causing an evacuation situation. My question is has anyone ever delt with fires (obviously of the car variety) and if so what tactics, deployment, training or any other valuable information that can be shared.

Thanks

The stairwell attached to the hospital should be pressurized... that would help keep the smoke out.

Your FD should already have preplanned for this contingency, but here goes...

The good news is... garage area is sprinklered. Know where the FD connections are.
The bad news... you still have to strecth a line for final extinguishment and overhaul.

Hopefully, the sprinkler systems will hold the fire in check.. but it it overwhelms the system... be prepared for a major league "Car-B-Q"! Be sure to invite the other stations and mutual aid, for you will be there for a while...

If your FD has a brush fire unit, and it is under the heifght restrictions for the parking garage, consider bring that in to a vehicle fire. The sprinklers should hold the fire in check, most brish rigs carry 200+ gallons of water, which should be sufficient to extinguish and mop up for a single vehicle fire if used correctly.
