We have an opportunity to get a new Polaris Ranger 6x6. We do have some wooded and hard access areas but mostly farm ground. In my years on this dept I remember only once that we had to go into the timber to fight a fire. Now with that said for those of you that have these rigs is it invaluable or more of a toy for the firehouse. It will cost us between 4 and 9 grand to set up for fire suppression and I just don’t know if I can sell it to the members
We have a fair number of brush/grass fires every year and usually they are a royal pain in the a_ _....But we use ATV's when available...we cannot justify buying them for the department....so we use our own....I have a 25 gallon tank and a spray unit with a 40 foot hose....works well.....Also have a trailer for the ATV...Rated for 1500 lbs...I can take equipment/supplies and manpower back to the fire area if it isn't accessable to the road....comes in very handy....Paul
I’m pretty sure this would be a great asset, one of our trustees likened it to a cordless drill, but I’m not sure I can sell it to enough people. With money tight and having a new 300grand truck ordered, I just don’t know. Right now I’m thinking if I can convince them to do away with the 200ft red line reel hose on the new truck that would save more than enough to pay for a skid-unit. I’m going to have to play department politics and ease into this. After all their giving us the $18000 Polaris, but if we don’t do something with it, I’ll have to send it to a different department.
