A little background for everyone here Joel was the Chief for Kandiyohi county Rescue Squad for some time and was one of the driving forces for better training and mutual aid in our county. I worked with Joel on numerous occasions over my 10yr career in Raymond. He taught me everything I know about extrication. He was a mentor for a lot of people during his career on Nov 9, 2009 he went into surgery for a valve replacement. He passed away from complications of the surgery in the operating room.
My wife deals with life insurance(when she talks about work I fall asleep it really is that boring). A couple days after the funeral she says I have two things I need to talk to you about.
1. "Why didn't you tell me they were going to a last call for him. I started crying as soon as I heard it." I looked at her and said do you know why most of us were wearing sunglasses out there? Most of us had tears as well. I said this is the man that talked me into getting into EMS as much as I am. Stood with his arm on shoulder after some of the crappiest calls anyone will ever see. And he wasn't that way just for me he was that way for a lot of people.
2. "I know we have life insurance on you but do you have a living will or anything like that and if you are killed in the line of duty how do you want your funeral to be and things like that." that question really got my attention and made me think. Im young and healthy so I had never thought about it.
So my question is have you thought about it so when your family is going through a hard time they dont have to try to make decisions that might put more stress on them? And Im not trying to sell anything just trying to give you some food for thought.
