Am I too old to get started?
I'm sure everyone here more than likely grew up wanting to be a firefighter. Like most of you, that was my dream as well. As the years came and went, I decided that I wanted to be an accountant. After 11 years of that, I want to jump out of this window beside me.
I am very interested to joining my local FD. I am 33, 6'5" and 258 lbs. I need to work on my stamina, but other than that, I'm in decent shape. Am I too old to get started?

You might want to try a Vollie Unit first....Most Career Departments have a max age restriction to join...As I have stated before...if you want it bad enough then you can do it.....Good luck....Paul

i would say go for it but a lot of fire departments(in my area anyways) have age restrictions of at least 18 and no older than 35 but like paul said if you want it bad enough you can do it

No way your still a young buck go for it but are you trying to go paid or vol i think paid has a age requirement and some vols have them to but most will take you good luck with it Probie lou

I am requesting information from a couple of chiefs in my area pertaining to volunteering. If I get into this and really find that it is my passion in life, how likely would it be to transition from volunteering to paid staff?

Dude, you sound like a total mule. That's awesome. You should have NO Problem in the volunteer world. Transitioning to the paid world is harder but not impossible. It all depends if you are flexible and don't mind moving. Check to see who is hiring, some have age requirements some don't. I.E last probie class in the RFD oldest was 53, then 50 youngest were 25 and 27 average age was 35.

Sounds like to me you'll be fine, as long as you keep in shape. When I went through my 1001-I-II we had a guy that was 48 going through with us. He made it through just fine, one of my partners went through his basic class that had one who was 56 and he said that guy put em all to shame on the PT.

Live the dream brother, 33 is almost a standard age this days for a lot of guys getting hired in So Cal or at least at my department. One of the mind sets on this one is that at your age, and with your job experience, you bring some cool tools to the table. One of the Captain's at my department was a CPA and switched over the fire service for the same reasons you mentioned. He's also very bright and difficult to compete against as far as promotional exams. Once you get on board, I am confident that you will do nothing but excel in this profession. Good luck!

Absolutely not!!! Lou, you would be welcome in my agency any day. Its not the size of the dog its the heart within the dog that matters. If you want to do this you will make the effort to become the Firefighter it takes. Good luck Lou.
