POMFRET, Conn. (AP) -- A Connecticut man was so engrossed with the tunes on his iPod that he didn't realize his house was on fire - until his alarm company called.

Pomfret Assistant Fire Chief Edward Bates says Andrew Riley told him he was listening to music Thursday afternoon when the blaze broke out on the upper floor of his 2 1/2-story house.

Bates says Riley didn't smell smoke or hear the smoke alarm going off.

After receiving the call, Riley dashed upstairs and shut a door to the burning room.

Firefighters arrived on the scene and quickly put out the blaze. The damage was limited to the exercise room and an adjoining office.

A fire marshal blamed the fire on an electrical malfunction in the exercise room.

the newer blackberry's (i have the curve) does the same thing as the i-phine. comes with in ear buds with an inline mic, when a call comes in the music pauses u take your call and then u havg up, the music starts playing again. probably what happened to this guy.

related story, i have a friend that was in his bedroom, fire broke out in the garage, traveled into the walls and basement. it was not till some propane bottles exploded taking out the wall in the basement family room did he realize his place was on fire. he was almost surrounded by fire and didn't know it.

scary how this animal behaves isn't it??
I wonder if the guy was on drugs or drunk...
wha was the brand name on those??? I sure could use em for my wife and 3 kids at times lol
We responded to a structure fire "with entrapment" several months ago. Our crews went in to rescue an elderly gentleman who had not responded to his neighbors pounding on the locked door & calling his name. The naturally assumed the worst. The fire was in the attic on the west end of the house. They found the 80+ yr old man in his den, a finished basement, on the other end of the house watching a football game on TV with the volume turned up. He didn't hear the smoke alarm. The smoke hadn't reached the basement. He had no clue his home was on fire until 2 firefighters in full PPE walked in & scared the bejezzes out of him.
A department near here had something like that.

Evidently a lightning strike started a fire in the attic of a house. First in engine arrived to find fire blowing out one end of the structure, while the front window showed the family calmly sitting at the dining room table eating supper.
Wow he is lucky he heard the phone ring !!!! Thank God it was just in that one area and not his whole house. I guess from now on the ipod will not be as loud
i bet that was a nice surprise.

we had a lady fall asleep on her couch watchin tv. woke up with a house full of smoke from a candle or somethin that caught the curtain on fire. luckily she grab a pot of water and got the carpet wet enough it only did minor damage and plus r guys got there quick and got the rest out
The IPod craze is also preventing the drivers of automobiles from hearing the sirens from approaching apparatus. This has created the situation whereby the apparatus is getting closer to the other vehicles undetected. This in turn creates a bigger surprise and reaction of the other drivers. As before with the car stereos, drivers could hear the sirens in addition to the car stereos since other sounds were allowed into the ear canals. Not the case with the IPods where the ear buds or compression holders exclude other sounds. IPod sounds at a lower decibel levels are more exclusive due to the proximity to the ear drum as well. Just random thoughts running around in my head... Nice to have the company of the voices in my head. Keith
this shows that we listening to our music and i-pod to loud. i know if the phone rings sometime i don't hear it because i have my music up to loud.
