If you gear has holes, you for sure shouldn't be even thinking about interior firefighting. SCBA seals out everything unless you put it on with junk in the mask. (see also routine maintainance and cleaning) Your point is not one of much value.
The bourkes aren't certified because they provide little to no protection and have that certain cosmetic look which some firefighters are after. Last time I checked when you get crap in your eyes it sucks, plain and simple.
Again, I stress folks, lighter helmets aren't always better! No matter what brand you buy or are loyal to.
Same here, I have a habit of destroying things I own as well, not on purpose though. Thus, why I LOVE my Bullard!!! Ten years, have put it through hell, and it still looks sharp and performs.
Agreed watch the light weights
I had recently bought a paul conway traditional style helmet which is simular to the bullard.I personally like it.My dept uses the cairns 1010.I think they all look the same.Mine has the bourke shields with the goggels.Alot of the dept's where i am from use them. But mine is the wrong color,I bought the black due to the price i needed red because i am a captain and may sell it for a red one.Shoot dude buy what you want.Their good helmets.
Personally from my experiences i would deff. agree with dennis hale and say go with the cairns 1010 ive had mine since ive started in the fire service and had never pailed me once, it takes the abuse, and its fairly lightweight. and as he said check out the new defender eye shields too!
that sounds like a great pick all of our at my station is bullards were have you looked for one have you tried galls.com
try thefirestore.com
Was going to respond but Brother you hit it exactly on the head....Bourkes are NOT NFPA approved...we just bought every interior man new lids and got the Cairnes 1010 with your choice...standard 5 inch shield or defender....I opted for the defender....love it...Stay safe and trust your gear....it will save your bacon when it needs to..........Paul
incase case you guys dont know... there are NFPA compliant bourkes out there... trust me ive seen them with my own eyes and have also asked about the difference...
Hey Troops,

Before I weigh in with my opinion on helmet choice let me ask you a couple of questions……

Will your department allow you to wear your own helmet? A lot of departments have the if we didn’t issue it, you can’t wear it rule. They will say it is for insurance reasons. Find this out before shelling out some hard earned cash.

Next, do you have buddies that already own the different helmets that you are looking at? If so borrow them and try them out. I’m not talking about just sitting it on your head for 30 seconds. Wear it for a period of time and if you could get a live burn training under your belt even better.

My opinion on helmets is I have been a leather forever guy and worn nothing but with my FD for over 25 years. There was that about three week period of the Bullard Darth Vader helmets, but we don’t talk about that. About ten years ago I got hired by the fire academy to teach and was issued a plastic New Yorker. Not sure of the brand, but it was very light weight. That helmet saw more fire duty in a burn season then many firefighter’s helmets see in a career. Being in your helmet for hours at a time, the lighter brain bucket was pretty nice and it stood up to getting knocked around.

Long story short, your helmet is a matter of personal preference. Most important, do your homework first.
If you are talking about the Morning Pride EZ Flips, they are full of crap. There is no way that any helmet can be NFPA compliant with just Bourkes, they provide zero eye protection. Read the standard. In order to compete with the outrageous claim of Morning Pride, another manufacturer is willing to give you the bourkes with another eye shield system for free if you order enough helmets. This is a sales ploy. Bourkes may look cool to some of you. That's all they are good for.
