I was wondering if there was anyone out therre who can help me out with some information...I live in upstate NY and want to start a wildland SAR. I have a malamute puppy that I have been training on my own but cannot seem to find anyone within a reasonable distance that does wildland training. We do have a USAR team about 30 min away but that doesn't do us much good out in the boonies. Our vet has a tech that also wants to start a group but neither of us has found anyone that has experience with air tracking (wildland) vs ground tracking (urban). I've been in EMS/Fire for about 18 years, most of it EMS. If anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate the help. Thanks

Contact Nasar, this is who is going to be doing your testing and certifications anyhow. They would be able to help.
What have you trained your dog to do so far?
So far he has had basic obedience, I'm teaching him to find our children, (they hide in the house, under blankets, in closets, behind the shower curtain etc. and he has to find them). I've been exposing him to fire trucks, heavy equipment, all different types of environments. He also is learning to go to ground with his "find" and I'm also working now on teaching him to howl when he goes to ground. He is also being exposed to other animals and strangers. We've come pretty far considering he is only 8 mo old and spent 6 weeks on crate rest for a broken leg....got that playing with a border collie and ran into a table crosspiece at 14 weeks old.
If he is eight months take him outside and start doing short runnaways. a runaway is nothing but someone with his favorite toy getting him all exited and making him bark, then that person runs out of the dogs site to make him use his knose to find the person and get his toy then work on his alert before you give him his reward. If the dog doesnt do good on the runaway try it again just make it shorter keep it fun for the dog. If you train to much at home the dog will start to think that he has to train all the time when he is home and not think that he can be a dog
