Sorry Paul, but I wont be buying anything! If my dept dont get it, I aint buying it! Unless it makes me look cool....and I dont look good in Orange!! I dont know about that study, Every night pic I have of me is blinded by the refelective stripes.
This was is a attic fire, still some smoke but you can see the reflectors bright.
Hey Dave....sorry man but you don't look that "cool" in the pic.....and yes there is some smoke and the camera was probably about 20 feet away....Not 1000 feet traveling at 60 mph on a wet and rainy highway....BUT, I respect your decision....Hope you don't get hurt ...because your insurance carrier may/or may not pay the Bills....The object here isn't to "Look cool" its to do a job (a very dangerous one) and to go home in one piece at the end of the night...I agree there are too many guidelines....but thats the rules to this game......Stay safe Brother.....Paul
There is an old adage that comes to mind in reference to this issue....It was brought to me by a Jump Master in the Airborne in the Army....He simply said "Son you ain't gotta like it...you just gotta do it." Any questions...? LOL Stay safe all and remember to keep the faith....Paul
yea some of us dont have turnout coats especially on the police and EMS side, yea i agree i have my own turnout stuff that i used when i went to college for firefighting but my boss wont let me use that

Paul, I think you mistook my statement. I was Kidding...In the firehouse we have this thing called a sense of humor....See, again I'm kidding. The pic showed that a well used fire coat still has reflective properties and an orange vest is not going to do anymore then the coat. Everyone is worried about your Ins. We have lost 4 guys in the last 2 years, we do not follow strict NFPA standards and everyone of them has been paid. Besides, he/she who does not know to block the road with that large fire engine/truck/Rescue company should not be driving! I rountinly will block 2 lanes of road for any and ALL MVA's, Does it piss people off...Hell Yeah but too bad for them. Also, your wrong...I do look cool in that pic...My mom told me i do so there!!! Again....sense of humor!!!

Are you kidding me? So what you're saying, Dave is that if you'd followed NFPA standards you'd still have those 4 guys? You need to look up the standard and actually read it. A reflective vest is way more visible than just your bunker gear! Also, simply blocking the road with your apparatus doesn't guarantee your safety. Your argument is a lot like the idiots who still refuse to wear seatbelts!

Not at all brian. 2 died last Auguest. Thermal burns to and smoke inhalation when the ceilling collapsed on them in a smoke explosion, One died of a heart attack after 2 fires and the 4th died from an infection he got from an injury from a fire.
I just dont see how the vest will do anything, and if you think that a vest is going to make you safer then parking the fire truck properly your out of your mind!
Stay safe boys, I hear they are going to make it mandatory that we wrap each other in bubble wrap for 2010!! Boy I cant wait for that.
Well Dave.....I draw the line at Mother comments...but the opening is really tempting....LOL...and if you check out LODD's and Close calls you will see a number of idiots that managed to hit those Big trucks with all the lights on them and a few Firefighters and EMS providers were killed....I agree that NFPA should stand for Not for Practical Applications....But until someone comes up with something better its about all we have other than OSHA....and OSHA HAS NO SENSE OF HUMOR....WITH THEM IT ISN'T A RECOMMENDATION ITS THE LAW.... Hand in there man.....Paul
i agree with you paul because it doesnt matter whether you park a big fire truck, police car, or ambulance across the road some one is not going to see it and then the next thing that you have is some one getting run over or killed
Our PPE is regarded as meeting the legal requirement here. And I'm about to be issued a new set in 'slime green', which should ad to the daytime visibility!!! But we do have high-vis gear to wear when on traffic duty (rarely enough police around)
If the vest is on properly, and fastened properly, it shouldn't 'drag' on the face of a patient. I've never noticed any of our paramedics having problems. And as for the time they take to put on, what's that, seconds? I can't remember the last time I saw a paramedic at an MVA not wearing a vest.
