I am talking about a helmet. Would you spend your own money for a helmet if you didn't like the one issued to you by the department? Would it be leather or plastic? New York style or Metro? Rachet, adjustable suspension?
How much is your noggin worth?

I would say if your F.D. is issuing helmets that don't provide NFPA compliant head protection, you've got bigger problems than whether or not to spend your own money!
I have and would again. Not only my 1010 helmet and leather boots but I got me gloves that I liked and a nomex hood that fit better. Also I bought my own handheld radio and a mobile radio for my truck. Then my lights and siren for my pov. And I respond in my pov alot so I have my own basic tools axe, fire rake, pulaski, rescue bar and rappeling rope. I would give a total price but I'm afraid my wife would see this.
While i have spent much more money on a personal item i don't think a helmet would be high on the new item list. The helmet that was issued to me by my department means the world to me. I am not a line firefighter but do respond as a pump operator. I have also taken the role of safety officer a few times. Mostly what i do is get the information from the person we are responding to. I am also a first responder and do what i can on scene. Why is my involvement in the department so small? Well i have a right leg that was amputated below the knee and joined the department (25 years ago) to just help out. Today i hold the rank of Sergent and are one of the senior members of the department. When my helmet (Cairns 1010) was issued to me it was totally unexpected on my part. I was happy with the turtle shell that i had . So if you're ever in my neck of the woods just look for the blue helmet.
Aw man, my probie helmet was an old 660 Metro. When my academy class graduated and got our 1010's, the department got rid of the Metros. Something about them no longer being NFPA compliant or something, (this was 1994). I would have loved to get mine and hang it up with all the "fire junk" I've collected over the years!
My F.D. is changing over to leather boots, I can't wait to get mine! I think they're the Warrington Pro's also.
I have spent my own money for a lid, and will do it again if need be. I've bought a N5A, and that's all I wear now. You can wear your soup bowls, I've worn one before. I'll stick with my leather. I'm not afraid to pay for things that I like. I spoil myself!
i spent $1800.00 of my money to put 10 of my firefighters in traditional cairns 1010 helments took me six months didnt have enough money in my budget to buy 20
I happen to like what they bought...but I don't think I would go to the tune of $ 400.00 that's some serious cash.....we have Cairns and our choice of shields...I picked the Defender and I love it....esp on MVA's....Good luck Brother.....Keep the faith........Paul
I have spent my own money on a helmet it is a big ben 2 and I love it If I had the money to buy a leather I would do it to but only to have that for show. Unless it was giving to me as a reward or as a present for my dedication to the department/community.
I have purchased both of the helmets that I own today, it is not that I did not like the helmets that my department wears, it is because my first helmet that I bought was a kind that I had gotten really comfortable with and felt good on my head. My second helmet was from the same manufacturer but just had bourkes. I personally do not own a leather helmet. I really think that they are heavier than today's materials. But it is personal preferance.
I can say that I have spent my own money for PPE and other items for my department but I would NEVER spend $$$$ just because I didn't like what was issued to me. Todays helmets are adjustable and even though you might not like the way it looks, it is PPE. Firefighting is not a fashon show.
you are right ppe is ppe my guys use to never mess with there ppe much . but seems since the traditionals and leather boots there messing with there ppe all the time . i never see a dirty hat or boots anymore they are really proud of there equipment there are 15 depts in our county 1 paid . we are the only one with traditionals and leather boots
