No, I may be insane sometimes for doing this job but purposely jumping out of an airplane doesn't seem to be high on my list. We respond to a number of hang glider accidents in our front country and all I can say is thank god for the new hoist on our helicopter. Our standard response for these is to tone out one our stations next to an airport, the on duty engine companies two paramedics get onboard the helicopter and perform any necessary rescues which typically involves dropping a medic down to the patient with a stokes, drop the 2nd one if needed, package the patient, hoist them back up to the chopper and then off to the hospital. It sure beats hiking into these remote locations and many times, necessitating getting a crew or engine companies to cut in a line for access and retrieval.
Well Damon I don't skydive but we've got a local guy that takes people up and drops down in a open field and he does this all summer long and we've had some close calls before like people getting caught in the trees but luckly nothing serious yet.
Something about jumping out of a perfectly fine airplane for sport just doesn't appeal...can't help you with that one other than to say it is generally a challenging call for either EMS or the coroner. One or the other will be put ot the test.
I have thought about it but this has just about cured me of that thought .
Normally, when I'm in a small plane, I'm usually flying it. There is NO REASON to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft. Now if it's going down... don't be in my way!
Well....about 100 years ago (lol) I was in the Army with the 5th Special Forces group and was a paratrooper with them...as part of our training we got certified for HALO (High Altitude Low Opening)...In other words....Jump at say 20,000 feet and open around 1,000 feet or so....You are really cooking then.....about 150 MPH give or take depending on your body.....and yes, I have landed in everything from trees to swamp to the Panama Canal.....and the funny part was that at the time I was afraid of heights.....LOL...OK, so I'm not the brightest crayon in the box.....But I'll be there if you need me...and in that I think my short comings may be forgiven....Stay safe all......Paul....ps....keep the faith
