this was brought about by the discussion what has the public ever done for you. it made me think of this. As everyone was aware we lost a firefighter about a month ago named Ryan Hummert in Mapelwood MO. he was shot during a vehicle fire. i brought my dept. brush truck to the funeral procession. as we were leaving the church enroute to the cemetery they had a major road closed for the procesion line. as we were driving down the road at a slow rate of speed (of course). i heard a lady complaining that it was ridiculous that the road was closed and she was stuck in traffic and blah blah blah. She was doing nothing but complaining about it to some one on a cell phone. it took everything i had not to stop my truck and get out and chew her up one side and down the other. it was obvious what was going on a whole lot of emergency vehicles from all over the place with lights going. the only thing that stopped me was the thought of a PR nightmare. plus i didnt think my chief would be happy with me if i had said something to her. understandable that she was crabby about being in traffic but show some respect.

Ha Just about everyday, somebodies stupidity infureates me, but thats why we got a job.
good answer ROFL
We had a house fire with report of a baby trapped on a 2 lane road in town. We had to close down the road and re-route traffic through a winding subdivision. A disgruntled citizen called the Fire Chief the next day and complained that she was inconvenienced by having to be detoured! From what I understand, the Chief politely set her straight once he explained the situation.

And FYI, no one was injured and the baby turned out to be just fine at the neighbor's house!
The public in general is why we have the Jaws, the Hoses, and the other cool stuff we play with. Like one saying goes "Go ahead drive like an ass i could use the practice." But the worst thing i hear is the same old stupid question. Do you work for the fire deptment? Makes me want to say no i wear this shirt cause its cool, but i dont.
How about when they think we're the Cops? "Excuse me Officer, there's a car parked in the handicapped spot, can you put a ticket on it?" Puhlease!
My biggest pet-peeve call. Was watching one of my favorite movies at the station one night and just as the final climatic scene was coming on the tones drop for a structure fire. We respond and get on scene with nothing showing. Turns out a neighbor had been pissed off for a while because this same person was constantly parking in front of a hydrant. She thought if we showed up, code, we do something about this parking sin. Wrong
you should of called th ecops and seen if they could of done anything about calling in a fake call
Here they would have been arrested for a false 911 call.
I don't remember exactly what happened to her. This was almost 30 years ago and on military housing. I do recall there was some talk about booting her out of housing.
Actually physically arrested? Taken down the Station even? A little bit draconian isn't it? The most severe treatment that I know of (and I don't know everything!) here was when two teenage girls thought they'd be nasty to another girl and rang 000 to say there was a fire. They ended up having to scrub the floors of the local Station - the Police gave them that option instead of being charged on summons for public nuisance. Who knows, they may even have liked the people there and later become firefighters themselves!!!
We all know there are people in the world that are so wrapped up in themselves that they expect the whole world to conform to their demands. Apparently it's a significant percentage of the population, for they show up at almost every incident, right?

We sometimes have to close one of the three major roads in our town, and invariably someone wanting to get from Point A to Point B knows only one way, and we have it blocked.

"But how am I supposed to get there? I don't know any other way."

"Uh, go back to town and buy a map?" or "I don't know, just turn around and get out of here!" come to mind, but we usually (not always) smile and patiently give the motorist a lesson in local geography.
several yrs ago we were at the scene of wires down, with a small fire burning in a tree. as we waited for the power co. we had the road shut down. well some a@@hole decides he needs a picture. and i politely ask him to stay behind the cones. this continues for several min's. I explain it's for his safety blah, blah , blah. a few minutes later i walk around the side of the truck to get another flare, this guy runs up again and pushes a 16 yr old girl (one of our juniors) down to the ground , then takes a picture and runs off to his vehicle parked down the road. i chase the guy back towards his vehicle he has already gotten in it and then tries to literally run me over as he flees the scene(note to all , the butt end of a portable radio will break a side window in a vehicle). luckily I was able to grab his plate # and radio to the PD and they were able to stop him and he was charged accordingly, several assualt and related type charges. (i was suprised the radio still worked too). all that to get a picture of some leaves in a tree burning.
