Women in the fire service(honest opinion)
Hola,
Just wanted to get some honest feed back about how men feel about having women serve as FF. Please be very honest! The reason for this is:
1. I have witnessed society feels women can't do this job- we are to fragile , etc.
2. People think women that work around a bunch of men must be easy or having relations with at least one of the them
3. Sexual harrassment issues arise more often
4. Some men have trouble taking orders from a woman (or vice versa)
These are just a few of the things I have seen or heard about.. Please share y you feel this way

Personally I dont have a problem with women in the fire service. As long as you can do the job it dont matter if you are a man or a woman. But now I will say that the majority of women would have a hard time doing some of the things that may be required. Most women would not be strong enough to Pull someone my size in full turnout gear out of a burning building. I aint sayin that all women couldnt, just that most couldnt. But like I said before, if you can do the job it dont matter that you are a woman.

Whenever I see women in the fire service I get nervous. You never know what normal converstaion will offend a woman. These days all that are needed are accusations to ruin someones life.
We recently had an incident here in my FD were a female firefighter working with a shift of all males. This stations is rather old so no seperated bunks. They get a call in the middle of the nite and while one of the guys is getting dressed she saw his penis. Well she flipped out and accused this guy of flashing her. This guy is a 12 year vet with a wife and kids and half asleep. This firefighter (i use the term loosely) decides to take offense to this thing that happens tomost men every AM when they wake up. Is that fair? I don't think so.
People should knwo what they are getting themselves into when you join the FD. Personally do you have a problem with penis should be an interview question, cause I have seen my fair share in that station becuase of either practical jokes, guys getting up in the middle of the nite, etc.
So my advice to all women is to grow some thicker skin. If someone is truly harrassing you trying to grope you, fondle you , asking for sexual favors etc. report it. But if you see some penis in the middle fo the nite ignore it.

I have no problem problem with women fire fighters. we have seven in our department and they all do what ever the job they are assigned.

It's not entirely your fault. If you didnt know it was there you would have to go looking for it. There at least 10-20 other females in the fire service postings throughout the forum. They all have a healthy mix of people like me who support them whole heartedly, helping hands are always needed and they perform the job as does any Male firefighter. Then of course you have the moron's who think of women as "sexual objects" or a "not strong enough for the job" or just generally degrade women in the fire service. (my personal opinion is they are plain out afraid that they will get shown up) It does grow bothersome to see that people are STILL prejudice against females in the fire service and it is 2007!!! In todays society it is time to move on, or move over and let someone else take the job.

Though I understand that this is a firefighter forum, I have to wonder why it's always "women in the fire service" or "women are treated differently in my fire department" or "men look at women in the fire service differently".
And you're right; this horse is ready for the glue factory, but here's my take on this tired, old steed.
I don't look at women and the job that they can do in the fire service any differently than women in construction, teaching, architecture, OTR trucking, or sports or anything else that had been previously dominated by the male of the sexes.
If you can do the job, then congratulation; you are hired.
Period.

I have no problem with women in the Fire Service, IF THEY CAN DO THE JOB! If they can't help a downed FF out from the third floor they should be sidelined with the guys on the job who don't perform, it is not gender decided it is ability. I know some women FF's that will work circles around a few male FF's I know.

i think that if a woman can do what is needed to do the job just as a man there is no reason they should not be able to be firefighters. some men dont even have to abality to do the job. as for them being easy just because they work with men is bs.
